What Are Mary Jane Shoes ?

Mary Jane shoes, or “Mary Janes” as they are affectionately called, are a style of shoe that typically had a low profile heel, with an open top and a strap over the top of the foot near to the ankle.

Popularized by the Brown Shoe Company, the style helped to make the company one of the most successful shoe companies in the US. Although formerly associated with flat heel design. Since about the early to mid eighties, Mary Janes have sported a high heel design, and are now generally a pump style, although there are brand names and designers that still make flat heel Mary Jane shoes.
